Gecko Emmentaler

This is the official information video produced by Emmentaler Switzerland and the ALP research institute regarding the first ever Emmentaler AOC with Gecko technology. It may sound exotic but it is actually very simple: the geckos are placed on the cows and once they are there, they can eat all the annoying blowflies. This means that the cows are more stress-free and produce more relaxed milk, which goes to producing better cheese.

Places at upper secondary schools or ‘gymis’ are in hot demand in Switzerland. Over the next few days, primary school pupils in the canton of Zurich are taking their admission tests to these academic schools. About 20 per cent of all students attend gymis – leading to the ‘matura’ school leaving certificate, which grants access to all universities. The proportion is very low compared to other European countries, and there’s a political debate over whether access to high schools should be broadened. (SF/swis

The Pigeon Project – swissinfo

Pigeons are well adapted to urban environments. They find plenty of food and there are no natural enemies. Often the authorities shoot or poison the animals to keep the pigeon population at bay. Now the Swiss capital Bern is approaching the problem in a more animal friendly way. (Michele Andina, swissinfo.ch)

In the wake of Japan’s earthquake, which caused a nuclear power plant meltdown, Switzerland decided to opt out of nuclear power and focus on promoting renewable energies. A cleantec conference in Bern, showcasing pioneering technologies in the fields of energy production, construction, water, waste disposal and mobility, demonstrates that the market is already responding to demands for a greener future.
