Swiss political leaders after the criminal foreigner initiative vote – a year after the minaret ban, the Swiss People’s Party has won another controversial vote: the automatic expulsion of non-Swiss offenders convicted of serious crimes. While the supporters are celebrating their victory, parliament will have to work hard to set out the specific detail needed to apply the initiative. (SF-swissinfo.ch)

Child aid – swissinfo

The Terre des hommes movement was founded 50 years ago by the Swiss Edmond Kaiser in Lausanne. The goal was to provide direct support to underprivileged children in developing countries. It soon showed that some illnesses couldn’t be treated in those countries. In 1970 the Terre des hommes home was founded in canton Valais to care for children undergoing surgery. Black sheep out – swissinfo

Swiss voters will decide this weekend on a proposal to deport foreign criminals. The initiative was introduced by the rightwing Swiss People’s Party. Parliament issued a counter-proposal with a different definition of the crimes that would qualify a foreigner for expulsion. Unlike the initiative, it states that deportations cannot violate national or international law. swissinfo asked the Swiss public which option they prefer. (Julie Hunt, swissinfo.ch)

Swiss thugs – swissinfo

Three youths from canton Zurich have been found guilty of randomly attacking five people during a school trip to Munich in June 2009. The 16 year-olds set out on an alcohol-fuelled campaign of violence, seriously injuring their victims. Two were found guilty of attempted murder and grievous bodily harm , and were sentenced to 7 years and nearly 5 years respectively. The third received a sentence of almost 3 years for grievous bodily harm. The trial has focused attention on the root causes of youth violence.
